2016 – 1st Annual Meeting of NSVIR / International Conference on Image Guided Therapies
The earliest documented milestone of NSVIR is the International Conference on Image Guided Therapies (ICIGT-2016), held from November 10–12, 2016 at Hotel Yak and Yeti, Kathmandu, and presented as the 1st Annual Meeting of NSVIR. This conference marked the formal academic emergence of NSVIR and demonstrated its early commitment to building interventional radiology in Nepal through collaboration with national and international partners. The brochure notes that more than 20 international interventional experts were invited, reflecting a strong international vision from the society’s foundation.
2017 – ABCNR Course: Emergency and Trauma Neuroimaging
In 2017, NSVIR served as a collaborating body in the American British Course in Neuroradiology (ABCNR), titled “Emergency and Trauma Neuroimaging,” held on October 9–10, 2017 at the National Trauma Center, Kathmandu. The course was organized by the Nepal Radiologists’ Association in collaboration with Health Exchange Nepal, UK, Public Health Concern Trust, Nepal, and NSVIR. It was designed for practicing radiologists, residents, and professionals in neurological sciences, and it focused on clinically relevant neuroradiology and trauma imaging. This collaboration highlights NSVIR’s early academic contribution beyond core vascular intervention into broader subspecialty radiology education.
2018 – No NSVIR program held
As clarified, there was no NSVIR program in 2018. This year should therefore be recorded as a non-program year in the historical timeline. 2019 – Expansion through CME and hands-on workshop programs. The year 2019 represents a major period of growth for NSVIR, with multiple documented academic programs. On May 25, 2019, NSVIR organized its first CME/workshop at Mediciti Hospital, Lalitpur, on Basics to Image Guided FNAC and Biopsy. The report records more than 75 participants and a strong focus on procedural skill development, including lectures, hands-on training, and biopsy/FNAC technique demonstration. On September 21, 2019, NSVIR held Updates in Interventional Radiology at Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Lalitpur. This one-day CME included more than 50 delegates and covered liver tumor management, lymphangiography, thoracic duct embolization, thyroid nodules, prostatic artery embolization, and interesting IR cases.
On November 15–16, 2019, NSVIR conducted a two-day CME/workshop at BPKIHS, Dharan, on image-guided drainage procedures. The report records more than 45 delegates and included live demonstration of PTBD, nephrostomy, USG-guided aspiration, TRUS-guided biopsy, CT-guided biopsy, and hands-on training with IR consumables. This showed NSVIR’s increasing national reach and workshop capacity.
2020 – Special interruption due to COVID
As clarified, 2020 was affected by the COVID situation, and this year should be described as a special disruption period, during which regular academic conference activity was not conducted in the usual format.
2021 – First webinar / online academic continuation
In response to the need for continuity during the pandemic period, NSVIR organized its first webinar on November 8, 2021, in collaboration with the Nepal Radiologists’ Association, on the occasion of International Day of Radiology-2021. Held through Zoom, the webinar was themed “Interventional Radiology Active Care for the Patient” and had more than 80 participants. Topics included oncology and palliative care interventions, hepatobiliary interventions, and pelvic interventions. This program represents NSVIR’s adaptation to digital academic engagement during the pandemic era.
2022 – Special interruption due to COVID
As noted, 2022 was also a special year affected by the COVID situation. This should be recorded as another non-regular program year, with no major standard annual conference documentation in the currently available files.
2023 – Revival and international academic strengthening
The year 2023 marks a strong revival of NSVIR’s academic activity, with three major documented programs. On October 10, 2023, NSVIR organized a CME at KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Lalitpur, on Portal Hypertension Management – Interventional Role. The report records more than 25 participants and presentations by Prof. Je Hwan Won, Dr. Sristi Singh, and Dr. Kajan Ranabhat. On November 4, 2023, NSVIR organized a CME/workshop at Mediciti Hospital, Lalitpur, in collaboration with the Nepal Radiologists’ Association and Nepal Mediciti, on Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology. The report states that more than 100 participants attended, with international faculty including Dr. Saurabh Jha, Dr. Stephen J. Hunt, and Dr. Abass M. Noor. On November 24–25, 2023, NSVIR held its International Conference 2023 at the Tribhuvan Army Officers’ Club, Kathmandu. The brochure shows collaboration with ISVIR and participation from multiple countries including India, Korea, Nepal, Japan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Norway. The program covered general interventions, oncology interventions, neuro-intervention, angioembolization, and peripheral vascular interventions, representing one of NSVIR’s broadest international academic events to date.
2024 – Annual Conference and International IR Workshop
The Annual Conference & International IR Workshop 2024 reflected another mature phase of NSVIR’s development. The event included a pre-conference in Pokhara on November 7, 2024, the main conference at Chandragiri Hills, Kathmandu on November 9, 2024, and a workshop at TUTH on November 10, 2024. The theme was “Less Invasive, More Innovative.” It involved collaboration with the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, with distinguished international faculty and a structured workshop model. The financial report records a grand total expense of NPR 1,345,035, indicating the large organizational scale of the event. In 2024, NSVIR conducted not only the Annual Conference & International IR Workshop 2024, but also a separate CME on Biliary Interventions at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital on December 27, 2024. The annual conference included a pre-conference in Pokhara,
the main conference in Kathmandu, and a workshop at TUTH, reflecting a large-scale national and international program. In addition, the year concluded with a focused CME on biliary interventions, jointly organized by TUTH and NSVIR, covering PTBD, biliary stenting, and biliary stone extraction. Together, these events show that 2024 was one of the most active and academically productive years for NSVIR, combining broad international conference activity with focused procedure-specific CME training.
2025 – Planned Annual Conference postponed after major preparatory work
For 2025, NSVIR planned the Annual Conference & International IR Workshop on the theme of Peripheral Vascular Intervention and Ablative Therapy, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, in Kathmandu, Nepal, with the conference schedule indicating live demonstration or recorded live case activity and the main annual conference program. The flyer also lists invited keynote faculty including Prof. Dr. Je Hwan Won, Dr. Eun Ju Ha, Dr. Jeong Min Lee, Dr. Kun Yung Kim, and Dr. Katsutoshi Takayama. As you clarified, substantial preparatory work for the 2025 conference had already been completed, including:
international faculty invitation
ticketing
confirmation processes
sponsorship request work
hotel booking arrangements
However, due to the September 8–9, 2025 protest situation, the annual conference had to be postponed for the security of the international faculty. Therefore, 2025 should be described as a prepared but postponed conference year, rather than a canceled or inactive year. The significance of this year lies in the fact that the society had already reached an advanced stage of conference planning and international coordination before postponement became necessary for safety reasons.
